A Pastor's Thoughts on Terrorism

1. “Thou shall not kill” is in the Bible, always has been always will be. (Exodus 20:13)

2. Jesus told us to love our enemies not seek them harm. (Luke 6:35)

3. He instructed us to pray for our persecutors. (Matthew 5:44)

4. If a Christian "terrorist" murdered multiple people in the name of Christ - multitudes of Christian leaders would immediately condemn such action.

5. Conversion occurs with the proclamation of the gospel not at the point of a sword.

6. Atrocities have occurred in history in the name of Christ, I know of not a single pastor or Christian leader who would approve, defend or recommend such behavior.

7. Not all Muslims are hateful people and promote violence.

8. Islamic terrorists do so in support of their Islamic faith.

9. There seems to be a strange silence on the part of Islamic leaders to condemn terrorism.

10. While Christians are not perfect our values show the nature of our faith.

11. If you hate me for these comments - I will love and pray for you (see 2 & 3 above)

Words we need to know

Regeneration, Justification, Propitiation, Justification: These are just some of the words Christians throw around which baffle some and confuse even students of the Bible. But shouldn't we know what those words mean since they are the words God has chosen to communicate His relationship with us? Let spend these summer months learning his Words of Victory and as we do, we will grow deeper, not only in our understanding, but we will be equipped to live as He intends. Wednesday nights, 6:30 pm, Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. I hope to see you there.

Failure is an option

Failure:  Not a word we like; not a description we like to have attached to us by others.  But in the living of life there is no escape from its clutches; it slips up on us unexpectedly and we fall and fail.  Sometimes morally, sometimes in achieving the goals of ourselves and others.  Sometimes it comes with a silent sting and sometimes with public humiliation.  Thankfully our God is the God of the second chance, the One who remembers sin no more and casts them into the depths of the sea and removes them as far as the east is from the west.  He allows us to keep serving in spite of our spotty record.   Some scars of sin remain long after the failure but no failure is final.  But what do we do - the reality is we are limited to a powerful set of responses to failure in our lives.  To make it simple I offer you not paragraphs or sentences but words- a list of words to cue your thinking and spark your imagination and hopefully restore you heart.  So here goes.

When faced with failure we can and should…
  • React
  • Regret
  • Repent
  • Release
  • Rectify
  • Refrain
  • Reconsider
  • Reflect
  • Refrain
  • Reform
  • Restore
  • Repair
  • Recover
  • Rearrange
  • Reorder
  • Rehearse
  • Remember
  • Rekindle
  • Rely

May God bless you and me as we move forward in spite of failure.

My New Book "Strange and Bizarre Stories from the Bible"

I have written a book - "Strange and Bizarre Stories from the Bible" and it is available in print form on Amazon, the Kindle version will be released on 5/5/16 you can preorder it now.

Here is a brief summary:

Anyone who advances beyond the standard, told-in-Sunday-school stories from the Bible will find that the all-time best seller has a number of oddities. In fact, even the standards are a bit wild if you think about it: A man getting swallowed by a fish and living to tell about it, men being unharmed inside a fiery furnace, God commanding Abraham to kill his son, and David bringing down a giant with one shot.

For many, the unusual claims of the Bible serve as ammunition to challenge the credibility of its content. But there is another way to look at these odd, even mind-boggling portions of Scripture. They provide a means for God to get vitally important messages through to us. Perhaps it takes a dose of the strange and bizarre to get our attention.

The author has been a pastor and Bible teacher for more than 30 years, and now in "Strange and Bizarre Stories from the Bible" he tackles these seemingly strange stories and powerfully presents them to the skeptic and the believer alike.

Thank all of you for your encouragement.

Fresh Start

Do you ever wish life had a "reset button" and that there was way to reboot the whole thing?  We likely would be selective in doing so; some things we would not change and other things we would change if we could.  The one thing that does need to change is us.  We are not born into the world as we should be and we don't live as  we were intended to.  But the great news is God offers a fresh start to life no matter where in life you are. This study will restore your hope and joy and may just change your life.  I hope you will join us in this study, Sundays at 9:00 am or 11:00 am. at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.  Intro video is below or here Introduction Video

Recharge Video - 2 Years Old!

Two years ago Recharge Video began.  As many of you know I had been experimenting with online video since 2009 but finally got serious in 2013.  Now two years later, 182 episodes published, thousands of views, followers, shares and likes - I am amazed at the opportunity God has given me!  From our micro-studio at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Charleston, West Virginia, to the hearts of people all over the world is a humbling reality and leads me to give God the credit for such an experience. With His help I will continue to connect with those of you I know and those I do not.  I hope to deliver fresh doses of encouragement each week to provide a spiritual recharge to you.

I would appreciate your continuing to share the word.  Your retweeting, sharing on Facebook, forwarding your e-mail or just telling others about Recharge Video will go along way to grow awareness about this ministry. The best place to send folks is to our main website at www.RechargeVideo.com.

I would also love hearing from you.  Leave a comment (you can at the bottom of this blog post) or click "like" when you see a video online and let me know you are out there.  Thank you so much for all of your encouragement and feedback. It really helps keep me going.

Blessings,
Jesse Waggoner
