The Risk of obeying God - Acts 5:29

100 years' journey to joy
I WAS shocked at her simple beauty. Even through the 1920s styling of her clothes and the yellow tint of the photograph, she stood there smiling and confident with an expression of being at peace with the world. The faded image bore no outward resemblance to the woman I had come to know.
I was her pastor. I had visited in her home many times, talked with her, prayed with her and sought to encourage her. But the woman I knew was nearing the century mark. Time had ravaged her body and robbed her of even the mobility to leave her tiny home. The silent thief of Alzheimer's disease had stolen the best part of her mind.
I knew from the often-repeated stories that she was an orphan, her mother dying in the process of giving birth. She was raised by friends of the family, never enjoyed the company of a brother or sister. She never married, never knew the companionship of a loving husband or the tender touch of a nursing baby. She never traveled, and she saw the ocean only once in her 100 years.
She was never able to finish high school as the need for an income outweighed the need for an education. She worked in a factory making shoes. I make more in a few days than she ever made in a month.
She has no retirement, no savings and, apart from the family of church, no one to care for her. She survives on a small Social Security check and prayer.
I have wondered if this is the future she envisioned as she posed for that picture somewhere in the distant past. A future of loneliness, hard work, hard times and poverty? A future without the fulfillment of the dreams that most of us hold dear. The expression in the picture is one of confidence and hope; from every outward standard of measurement, her life has been anything but marked by happiness.
But if you knew her, in spite of a spotty memory and confusion, you would know that she has something money and achievement cannot purchase. Her spirit was one marked by an inner strength, a peace that goes beyond my ability to understand.
In spite of it all, she is content. In fact, she is joyful and thankful, rather than petty and bitter. She is always focused on what God has given her and not for a second on what God chose for her to do without. Her only disappointment is that God has seen fit to leave her here so long when she wants to go home.
The outward expression on a time-worn picture is a reality that is now seen in the inward images of the heart. This woman has found joy! The kind of joy I want to experience every day, every moment. I have come to her to give, to minister. Instead I have been ministered to. I have been encouraged and I have been wounded. I have been rebuked by how often I have taken the misguided path that believes lasting contentment and joy can be found in the trinkets and experiences of this world. Her life, the one I can see as whole from the picture I hold in my hand and the face that is before me, teaches me that joy can come only from things that touch eternity. It comes only from a person beyond this Earth and beyond this life. It only comes from a relationship with our Maker.
Psalms 16:11 expresses the idea in divine terms: "In Your presence is the fullness of joy."
One ultimately finds real and lasting joy in being with the God of the universe. It is not found in the stuff of the world. It is not found in possessions, in achievement or position. It is found in a simple dependence and contentment that has its origin in Him.
Why not take a few moments and take a look at the joy level of your life? Please do not confuse joy with happiness. The comings and goings of happiness are determined by the circumstances of this life. Joy is determined by our being in His presence and is independent of the circumstances of life. Joy is attainable, but only through a relationship with our Heavenly Father, gained through Jesus Christ.
She found this joy and lived it and lives it still. This is the goal I wish to pursue. I encourage you to make the journey as well.

Eight tips for making Sunday worship better
1. Pray ahead of time
Ask God to guide and speak to you. Thank Him for the opportunity to meet with Him and His people.
2. Know what is going on
Pay attention to the teaching program. Read the passage ahead of time if you can and take advantage of all the resources to stay in touch.
3. Don't let last Sunday be the last time you spent time with God
Enough said.
4. Sing with your brain
Try to understand and express the message of the song to God. Keep the mind engaged as well as your emotions.
5. Plan to give
Have a plan for giving and use your giving as a means of expressing your heart to God
6. Look for someone to bless
Whether an old friend or someone you don’t know, your greeting, love and attention will help them feel the warmth of God’s people.
7. Listen carefully
Give your full attention to what is being shared. Fight the temptation to allow your mind to drift. Check yourself by trying to summarize the sermon when complete.
8. Follow in your Bible
Bring a Bible with you. Follow along as it is being taught. Take notes if you like or use the ones provided. You may not be able to recall all of the message but you can always come back to the source material.

Images of the Holy Spirit
I hope as the days of Summer draw to a close you are experiencing the blessings of God. I want to invite you to get in on the beginning of our next Biblical study and I trust it will open up a rich flow of blessing in your life. This new adventure begins this Sunday at 9 and 11 am. We will look at a number of biblical images of the Holy Spirit to broaden our understanding of the Spirit and sharpen our biblical focus. We are interested in more than just the powerful language of the Bible- we will focus on the relationship to the reality behind the image. For example: we might enjoy the idea that the Spirit flows like life-giving water but the water does no good unless we take a drink. I hope you will join us in this life-changing study.

Waiting Rooms

As I write this I am sitting in a waiting room. I am not fond of waiting rooms. It is a nice waiting room; a flat panel TV tuned to the Weather Channel just told me it is raining in Milwaukee. The magazine selection is ok, except the titles seem a little tilted towards women; I can't seem to find a Road and Track or Popular Mechanics in the stack. The medical personnel at this facility are friendly and efficient and the furniture is modern and comfortable. Free wifi would be nice but writing on my iPad lets me do something productive while I wait. But to be honest, I would rather be somewhere else. I guess the real reason I am not a fan of waiting rooms is I am trapped here. I am captive to a schedule other than my own. I have no control over when I can be set free from this antiseptic closet. I do like being in control. I like to control my schedule, my environment, my to-do list and a hundred other things.
As I sit here and reflect on waiting, I recall that God uses "waiting rooms" - Joseph spent years in slavery and jail before he became an official in Egypt. Moses waited 80 years before starting his mission of deliverance. David waited years from his anointing until he assumed the throne. Before He began His public ministry, Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness; Paul spent 3 years in Arabia and considerable time in prison. There must be some virtue in waiting.
Maybe the "waiting room" experiences of life are meant to help us break the addiction of control. Our God wants us to know that we need to recognize and allow His control in our lives. Our waiting is to be more than marking time- it should be a time to renew our confidence in God's ability and involvement in our lives. If we do, our expectations, frustrations and evaluations of life will slide into a more comfortable place. We can spend more time praising and less time complaining. More joy, less stress. More peace, less conflict.
As I close, I am still in the waiting room and don't know how long I will be here, but the above thoughts give me a little more perspective and peace and I like that. Being a little less in control is genuinely good for me. But I am going to find something on TV besides the Weather Channel.
Blessings,
Jesse Waggoner
